June 2013

It has been announced in all the churches in the Benefice that our Vicar, Rev Chris Wray, is to retire at the end of August with his last service being the Benefice Service on 25 August.  We wish him well as he prepares for his retirement and for his new life in Barkisland.  We can’t say at this stage how long it will be until a new Vicar is appointed.  There will be more on the Interregnum shortly. The results of this month’s 100 Club are: £100 Kathleen Mazey (33), £50 Stuart Phillips (1), £25 David Ashton (21).  Kathleen is … Read more…

Divine Feasts

Divine Feasts is a follow-up to Divine Delicacies which was produced in 2008 and raised over £2500 for the Restoration Fund.  This book also involves just about everyone in the valley, ranging from residents to local restaurants, pubs, cafes and takeaways, a farm shop, schools, a newsagents and a post office.  It includes a lot of interesting food facts, amusing accounts of feasts and quotes from literature on eating and drinking.  One of the most fascinating bits of local history in the book is how shopping has changed in the village since the 1950s.  A list has been compiled of the shops around … Read more…

May 2013

On Bank Holiday Monday, 6 May, the sun shone on Mill Fold and St Bart’s raised £280 for church funds at Ripponden Gala.  This year we launched our new Human Fruit Machine which was great fun and proved a popular attraction.  Plants, home-made sweets and buns went down well and were a near sell-out. The following Friday, just four days later, the weather was so appalling that we packed up early from the charity market stall in Halifax, having raised only £150 for general funds.  A week later we held a Beetle Drive which took some of us back to … Read more…

Children at St Bartholomew’s

Little Fishes, our group for pre-school children and their carers, celebrated Easter at our April meeting. We heard the Holy Week and Easter story, after which the children decorated a garland with pictures of the main Easter events. Next month we will be having a ‘picnic’  as we will be looking at the feeding of the five thousand.

After another busy year of fund-raising and social events at St Bart’s in 2012, culminating in the successful 3rd winter market on 8 December, the year has got off to a delayed start due to snow.  Last Saturday, 19 January, we reluctantly postponed the Epiphany Supper due to the weather.  It will now be held on 9 February.
